Not as much as you might think.

As a guide, Owners costs will include:

٠  purchase of the horse
٠  agistment fees
٠  farrier fees
٠  training fees
٠  transportation in most instances
٠  veterinary and dentist fees

Unlike other horse racing codes, Owners DO NOT have to pay for many costly fees. This policy includes:

No nomination fees when a trainer nominates a horse to run in a race.  No acceptance fees when a trainer accepts the opportunity to run in the race for which the horse was nominated (.5% of the stake is required if the race stake money is over $100,000).  No fees to register your own colours.

Further, for VicBred horses the following cost are waived:

NO transfer fees when a horse changes Owners

NO lease fees should Ownership structures change and a horse is leased

NO clearance fees for a horse that moves interstate to race or back to Victoria

NO naming fees for Owners to name a new horse

Harness Racing Victoria also covers the cost of the driver of your horse should the horse not finish in the top four placing's of a race. Drivers of horses that finish in the top are paid from the stake money earnt.
