Becoming an owner of a harness horse can vary from a
few hundred dollars through to thousands of dollars
depending on confirmation, breeding, age, sex,
colour and racetrack performance. Horses can be
purchased at any stage throughout their career
although the most popular method is via annual
yearling sales. The average price of a yearling over
the last few years has been approximately $11,000.
Harness Racing syndicates?
Becoming involved in the ownership of a harness
horse through syndication is a cost-effective way to
get started, with the added benefit that you belong
to a group who will share in all the fun and
excitement. There are various industry participants
who form syndicates, including a number of the major
trainers, or you can set up your own.
Leasing a harness horse?
Many owners, especially breeders, are willing to
lease their horses to individuals or groups who want
to race them.
